Memosail Skipper Sailing 1986

The Memosail Skipper is a special regatta/yacht timer watch with some features and technologies that set it apart from ordinary chronographs. Here are the special features:

#1 Regatta Countdown Complication

The Memosail Skipper has a countdown function that allows the last minutes before the start of a sailing regatta to be tracked with visual indicators (e.g., color discs, disk, or changing elements). The goal is to help sailors find the ideal moment to cross the starting line.

#2 Hybrid Technology

Early models are built around a mechanical base movement (e.g., ETA 2671) with a patented module that contains the battery, integrated circuit, and countdown mechanism. This solution serves to limit energy consumption while ensuring reliable timekeeping and an independent countdown function.  In newer versions (from around 2003), the Memotime 883 module is used, either combined with a mechanical movement or as a purely quartz-based system.

#3 Caliber 7757 in Special Versions

In some editions – such as the Skipper (or Skipper Jubilee) – the Valjoux Caliber 7757 movement is used, a specialized regatta movement. This variant is technically distinct from other Memosail models.

#4 Case, Features, and Water Resistance

The 1989 model featured a stainless steel case with a rotating bezel and water resistance up to 100 m. The design combines functional elements (start display, countdown mechanism) with a strap/case concept that can also be used in maritime environments.

#5 Historical and Rare Status

The Skipper (and especially the Skipper Jubilee) were produced in limited editions. Its status as a regatta watch makes it a sought-after collector's item among vintage enthusiasts. Some pieces feature exotic case materials (e.g., titanium with gold applications) and special versions.
